Westport Ward
The Buller District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of ten councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). six councillors will be elected from the Westport ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

    Promote and facilitate the increased use of solar energy by households in Buller.

  • Protect Westport from the flooding issues forecast for our future.

  • Strengthen infrastructure and services to prevent flooding and natural disasters posing unacceptable risks to Buller.

    Support government and non-government emergency management capabilities to mitigate the risks posed to Buller by disasters.

    Support resource extraction in Buller while preserving and improving the environment for future generations.

  • Allow the removal of material from the Buller River to lessen the risk of flooding in the township.

    Establish a robust rescue plan for Alpine Fault movement and prepare and adapt as Buller will be isolated for a lengthy time.

    Utilise the knowledge of the Buller people to assist in creating contingency plans for events affecting the Buller region.
