Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Ensure that adequate emergency support services are available when needed and maintain a resilient venue to house these services.
Accept the increasing frequency of severe weather events that threaten security and wellbeing and respond accordingly.
Develop neighbourhood-based plans for initial civil defence based on effective communication and mutual support at the street level.
Promote and facilitate the increased use of solar energy by households in Buller.
Protect Westport from the flooding issues forecast for our future.
Strengthen infrastructure and services to prevent flooding and natural disasters posing unacceptable risks to Buller.
Support government and non-government emergency management capabilities to mitigate the risks posed to Buller by disasters.
Support resource extraction in Buller while preserving and improving the environment for future generations.
Allow the removal of material from the Buller River to lessen the risk of flooding in the township.
