Buller District Council

Westport Ward
The Buller District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of ten councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). six councillors will be elected from the Westport ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Challenge central government to pay their fair share for infrastructure costs to rates-exempt or reduced organisations and landowners.

    Support the development and sustainment of maritime, air and land entries and exits to and from Buller.

    Work with central government and volunteers to improve, maintain and promote Buller cycle trails.

  • Ensure the viability of the airport and port.

  • Encourage local volunteers to continue developing walking and cycling tracks within the Buller area by reducing compliance costs.

    Support the continuation of the local airport.

    Work with central government to continue advocating for the SPR status of the Karamea road.

  • Continue the development of user-friendly walking and cycling routes.

    Maintain and, if possible, extend the airlink between Westport and Wellington.

    Promote the use of the Total Mobility Scheme for subsidised taxi use in Buller.
