Westport Ward
The Buller District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of ten councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). six councillors will be elected from the Westport ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Local government is a foundational part of our democracy. But local democracy isn’t just about holding elections every three years – it’s about the day-to-day ways people have their say in the decisions that affect us all.

  • Continue to provide open and transparent communication and information sharing in all aspects of council operation.

    Ensure that the council represents the demographics within the community and seek the views of mana whenua.

    Support the CE to provide a positive working environment for staff and seek regular feedback to maintain this.

  • Continue to involve local iwi in governance processes.

    Promote the use of public forum as a means for community members to communicate with councillors and remove unnecessary and arcane barriers.

    Use local media sources to communicate with the community and be proactive rather than reactive when dealing with news media.

  • Be accountable and contactable for ratepayers and lead with integrity and transparency.

    Focus on doing the basics such as water, sewage, waste, infrastructure and roading well before approving any discretionary funding.

    Have the council and subsidiaries expenditure reviewed to identify where savings can be made.

  • Be transparent by respecting that representatives are of the public, keeping the public notified to create engagement.

    Minimise and, if possible, reduce council costs, keep expenditure reasonable and rates rising to a minimum.

    Minimise or negate the impact minority persons or groups have on the majority and allow only New Zealand law to prevent beneficial projects.

  • Increase access to community engagement as the people of Buller deserve communication and opportunity to share their views.
