Climate change and resilience
Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Ensure civil defence people have the equipment and training needed to assess the public in any natural disaster.
Make sure all environmental targets are workable, affordable and grounded in science.
Progress much needed flood protection upgrades in partnership with central government.
Continue with introducing more electric buses on our public transport networks including My Way in Timaru.
Ensure adequate flood resilience in South Canterbury by providing 1:200 year flood protection as most flood protection is 1:50.
Maintain strong civil defence capacity and co-ordination in Canterbury. The council's key role is providing rainfall and flood prediction advice.
