South Canterbury/Ōtuhituhi Constituency
Environment Canterbury is the regional council for Canterbury. It makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of up to 16 councillors. are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region), including two councillors from the South Canterbury/Ōtuhituhi  constituency. Up to two councillors can be appointed by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Helping communities get from A to B is a key responsibility of local government, from making sure the buses run on time to providing car parking and walking and cycling paths. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Ensure that ratepayers receive value for money for public transport, which is limited in Timaru within the South Canterbury region.

    Work with central government and councils to ensure transport infrastructure is secure for the large region of South Canterbury.

  • Develop maritime transport better for long-term resilience, for example AF8 is not if but when.

    Make public transport cost-effective by moving it into a CCO and taking advantage of the Sustainable Public Transport Model.

    Support airports as great assets.
