Utilities and services
Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

Address water issues (Three Waters) which was initiated at the request of local government as a health reform.
Improve environmental monitoring so the public can practise self-care during high rainfall and flood events.
Simplify permits with clear pre-advice on the likelihood of obtaining them.
Ensure best practices for monitoring rainfall levels and maritime alerts that may cause problems to drinkable water infrastructure.
Process consents for improvements to water supply, wastewater and sewerage in a timely manner, addressing delays caused by the current RMA.
