Mayor of Far North District

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the district and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Far North District Council mayoral election.

Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Make better use of existing infrastructure rather than pursuing shiny new things. Dated does not have to mean shabby.

Provide easier enforcement tools to address illegal dumping, recognising recycling and rubbish are problematic and some find it easier to dump illegally than do the right thing.

Support the regional water CCO as compliance and renewals become more actionable and recognise affordability as a risk that cannot be ignored.

  • Lead a fair review of the dog management policy and bylaw.

Lead a successful transfer of wastewater and water services to a new regional CCO that delivers for the Far North.
