The Greater Wellington Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of 14 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). three councillors will be elected from the Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai/Lower Hutt constituency. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper.     Support seamless integration of safe walking, cycling, accessibility, prams, scooters and so on into public transport, streets and paths.

  • Encourage bike use with more bike lockers sponsored at stations and more bike trains to make it safer and easier for kids to cycle to school.

    Increase electric buses and trains using renewable electricity generated on council land and parks to save substantial fuel costs and reduce emissions.

    Make public transport easier to use and bring on part-time drivers to create a bigger, more flexible driver pool, making service more reliable.

  • Promote and invest in rail services, working with central government to upgrade local and interprovincial services and facilities.

    Review and improve local bus networks, with integrated ticketing and connections, and support improved links for Wainuiomata and Eastbourne.

    Champion improved cross valley connections, support well-placed cycleways and push for regional roading improvements.

  • Identify incentives to reduce single-occupant car use at peak times to lengthen the life of existing road stock.

    Identify roads which are at capacity and which roads will be at capacity in 10 years to allow alternative planning.

    Identify where free public transport offering would allow savings on infrastructure costs.
