Henderson-Massey Local Board

The Henderson-Massey Local Board is one of 21 local boards in Auckland. The local board makes a plan for your area and decides on local issues, activities and facilities. It also oversees council services and facilities in your area, including libraries and parks. The local board is made up of eight members. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

    Expand waste minimisation initiatives by supporting recycling, composting and community-led zero waste solutions.

    Strengthen water quality and infrastructure to ensure safe, reliable and sustainable supply for all households.

  • Make sure council services are equitable and affordable for all. Charge pollution and waste at source and make it easy for people to do right.

    Minimise waste across the city, improve composting, recycling and re-using systems and empower communities to do so.

    Prioritise wastewater and stormwater infrastructure to reduce overflows and leaks and improve water quality as a top priority.

  • Enforce stricter animal control laws for ferocious dogs, especially those used for illegal blood sports.

    Implement a more robust recycling process because currently most recyclable items go to landfill.

    Maintain weekly, rates-funded rubbish collection and do not support fortnightly rubbish collection.

  • Advocate for blue-green network to manage stormwater and upgrade our wastewater and stormwater infrastructure due to intensification.

    Ensure drains, waterways and streets are cleaned frequently to prevent flooding and maintain public spaces.

    Support local groups like Rivercare Group Te Wai O Pariera that report stormwater issues and waste minimisation groups like Eco Matters.

  • Advocate for continued investment in local water infrastructure to ensure a secure and high-quality drinking water supply.

    Advocate for regular and thorough street cleaning in town centres and commercial areas to maintain a clean and attractive environment.

    Support a simplified and consistent rubbish and recycling collection service across the local board area to reduce waste sent to landfills.

  • Introduce stronger pet control measures to reduce dog roaming, attacks and support desexing initiatives. Support pet rescues with trapping and rehoming.

    Retain regular street cleaning services, increasing regularity in flood zone areas to reduce pollution into waterways.

    Retain the weekly rubbish service and reinstate all of the rubbish bins that were removed to keep streets free from litter.

  • Implement a local dog safety campaign with animal management to publicise local dog walking rules and good dog owner etiquette.

    Implement regular town centre street cleaning and litter sweeps in Henderson and Te Atatu and work with local BIDs.

    Support local community groups working on water quality projects and advocate to Healthy Waters on managing wastewater overflows.

  • Grow green infrastructure like rain gardens and bioswales to prevent problems with stormwater overloading water infrastructure.

    Organise and direct public composting as a natural, green form of recycling because household food waste can fuel regrowth of tree canopy.
