Malvern Community Board

The Malvern Community Board represents your local community and advocates to Selwyn District Council about local issues, including public transport and facilities such as libraries and parks. The board is made up of six members: five members elected by voters, including Three members from your area, and one member from the Selwyn District council. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

  • Make having a greenwaste bin voluntary for individual homeowners rather than demand extra rates as many residents compost greenwaste.

    Promote the use of clean air approved log burners over gas heating.

    Request council to provide greenwaste shredders at council pits on Saturday mornings so residents can bring tree trimmings in for processing.

  • Continue council support promoting car charging facilities as part of all new construction projects.

    Promote community engagement in individuals' preparation for immediate post-disaster resilience before central support is available.

    Support communities to help them determine clear plans to repair, demolish and replace previously identified earthquake-prone buildings.

  • Establish a maintenance plan for good drainage and clearing debris from rivers to reduce the effects of flooding in rural Malvern areas.

    Establish a sustainable plan to ensure that all future infrastructure projects are designed with the effects of climate change in mind.

    Work with ECan on creating affordable and efficient train services on the existing network to reduce traffic volumes and air pollution.
