Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

Propose sealing shingled roads in rural towns and establish a sustainable plan to fix potholes on main rural roads.
Propose that NZ Rail and Environment Canterbury offer commuter train services from satellite townships.
Propose that NZ Rail and Environment Canterbury seriously investigate using the current railway system to get heavy goods vehicles off roads.
Ask council to help fund local community vehicle trusts to offer shuttle services from rural townships into Rolleston and Christchurch.
Recognise the importance of aviation to agriculture and tourism and work to safeguard the ability for aircraft to land in the backcountry.
Require children aged five to ten to always wear high-visibility vests on the way to and from schools.
Develop a policy that over time shows development of footpaths and cycleways between the smaller townships on road verges separated from cars.
