New Plymouth District Council

The New Plymouth District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 14 councillors and the mayor. This election is for the five councillors elected by all voters in the district. The other councillors will be elected to represent wards (areas in the district). This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the New Plymouth District Council election.

Why I'm standing

I believe that we can have great local infrastructure, a healthy environment, and be culturally vibrant without it costing the earth. I think that a progressive, positive, but realistic, fact-based approach to issues and decisions is the way to ensure a New Plymouth is truly a "Sustainable Lifestyle Capital". I firmly believe that when councils do their jobs properly, spending money creates more value than it costs – doing things collectively that others can't do.

About me

I have diverse and unique experience in governance, economic development, social entrepreneurship, and the environment; I am a former Finance Director. I have a big heart and international experience, coupled with deep local community connections. Current NPDC Sustainability Working Party member, former Sustainable Taranaki general manager. I will work collaboratively to progress positive, value-for-money, smart solutions to current NPDC challenges of financial rigour, climate adaptation, social and economic well-being, for current and future generations.

My priorities
  1. Bring financial expertise and fact-based decisions to the council table.
  2. Localise organic waste processing for less transport emissions, more local jobs and local compost.
  3. Modernise and electrify New Plymouth District's infrastructure – prioritising water, public and private transport and "Made in Taranaki".
