Otago Regional Council

Molyneux Constituency
The Otago Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of 12 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). two councillors will be elected from the Molyneux  constituency. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Climate change and resilience

Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

  • Continue seeking a climate change response from ORC including providing EV chargers in their buildings and Bee Cards instead of carparks for staff.

    Increase investment in monitoring and understanding changes in climate to allow communities to make timely decisions.

    Work to ensure better appropriate responses to ETS investments.

  • Advocate for actual carbon emission reductions in a timely manner at the source with ORC leading by example.

    Ensure existing flood and drainage infrastructure is maintained to its design capacity.

    Promote community liaison groups to inform council capital investment and work programmes for adaptation and infrastructure management.

  • Invest in stormwater systems and flood banks to protect homes, businesses and communities from severe weather.

    Remove emissions considerations from all council decisions and consents and prioritise value for money.
