Otago Regional Council

Molyneux Constituency
The Otago Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of 12 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). two councillors will be elected from the Molyneux  constituency. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Protecting the environment and managing natural resources is a key responsibility of regional councils. Regional councils are often also involved in pest control and resource management.

Protecting the environment and managing natural resources is a key responsibility of regional councils. Regional councils are often also involved in pest control and resource management.

  • Lobby government for better, more flexible biosecurity tools that allow less planning and more action to address weeds and pests.

    Provide guides and plans that allow for good management practices supporting improved environmental outcomes and provide funding streams.

    Work with communities to address the big issues, understand them and work out collaboratively the real solutions using science.

  • Cut wasteful compliance costs that punish small landowners and businesses but deliver little for biodiversity outcomes.

    Hold forest owners accountable for pest control so neighbouring farms and communities are not forced to carry the costs of invasive animals.

    Trust communities and landowners to lead biodiversity protection with council acting as a supporter, not a controller.
