Otago Regional Council

Molyneux Constituency
The Otago Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of 12 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). two councillors will be elected from the Molyneux  constituency. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Local government is a foundational part of our democracy. But local democracy isn’t just about holding elections every three years – it’s about the day-to-day ways people have their say in the decisions that affect us all.

  • Actively participate in local government reform once the role of local government is redefined to achieve the required outputs of new legislation.

    Promote a governance structure that empowers community groups and reduces layers of governance.

    Promote the establishment of community groups to inform policy development and implementation.

  • Facilitate whole of community understanding of issues and opportunities working with mana whenua and communities together.

    Invest more funding into community actions and less into administration.

    Prioritise community catchment action planning, address those identified needs and support that with planning and funding.

  • End race-based policies across local government and treat every resident equally and fairly.

    Oppose voting rights for unelected iwi representatives and ensure decisions rest with elected councillors.

    Uphold free speech in council venues so lawful community groups can access them without bias.
