Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

Provide safe, reliable drinking water while ensuring wastewater and sewerage systems meet community needs and are affordable.
Improve and align rubbish, recycling and composting services to reduce landfill that meet the needs of each community.
Maintain reserves, parks and public spaces to meet each community’s needs and support healthy, welcoming towns and villages.
Ensure everyone in the district has access to water at all times and that provisions are in place to ensure this even at times of risk.
Ensure sufficient waste management is provided to all homes in the district and is not limited due to access.
