South Waikato District Council

Tokoroa Ward
The South Waikato District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of ten councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). six councillors will be elected from the Tokoroa ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

    Implement food waste collection as stated in the waste management plan to have been done by 2025.

    Scope and support a collaborative zero-waste hub where reusable building waste and secondhand DIY materials can be dropped off and purchased.

  • Make waste disposal depots near to each town in the region as the need to travel across the region to dispose of rubbish is wasteful and costly.

    Register cat and dog owners, not dogs and cats, making owners responsible to make their pets identifiable, not council.

    Revitalise street cleaning and ensure regular and timely maintenance of garden areas, edges and footpaths.
