Rates and revenue

The work of local government is funded mainly by property taxes in the local area, known as rates. This makes up around 60% of council expenditure, with the rest coming from user charges, investment income, regulatory fees and roading subsidies. Councils can also borrow money to spread the cost of large investments such as infrastructure over a longer period of time.

  • Stop constant and excessive rate increases!

Encourage all council service providers to do more with less.

Build plan to reduce debt over time.

  • Scrutinise all council financial management.

Move the organisation to lean operations to eliminate waste of resources and identify efficient business practices.

  • Responsible investment and fiduciary responsibility are extremely important. I would like to see more training for board members.

Granting for community activities is so important, but not when opportunities are wasted by mismanaged processes. Must be a strategy.

Rates are inevitable and will increase, with insurance increasing. Waste will need to be cut. Council must prioritise spending.
