Buller District Council

Westport Ward
The Buller District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 10 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Six councillors will be elected from the Westport ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Encourage the use of e-bikes and provide cycleways so those who live out of Westport have viable low-carbon transport alternatives.

    Continue to improve cycleway infrastructure – many of our roads do not have designated lanes in rideable condition.

  • Continue to support the development of the walkways and cycleways as a means of recreation and transport.

    Work with central and local government to upgrade and repair roads to improve safety and ensure that Buller remains accessible.

    Ensure that the local airport remains a viable transport service to and from Westport.

  • Explore ways to increase public transport within the region.

    Explore feasibility for staged planning of cycleways linking Northern Kawatiri/Buller with Westport and the coastal cycle trail.
