Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Ensure reliable access is maintained (shared path already underway).

Advocate, improve and promote public and active transport options and facilities to reduce carbon emissions and reduce need to build roads.
Promote housing development away from at risk areas, and make access and services more resilient to sea level rise and weather extremes.
Develop integrated communications channels to promote reduction, readiness, response and recovery. An informed community is resilient.
Advocate for better public transport links across the Wellington region and greater incentives to use public transport.
Establish monitoring of and reporting on Eastbourne's carbon footprint.
Promote sustainability through reducing household waste, improved recycling, and greater access to composting.

Extend shared pathways to provide safe alternative to private vehicle usage.
Reduce green waste emissions by developing kerbside collection services.
Liaise with the project team and residents to support the Tupua Horo Nuku Eastern Bays Shared Path construction.
