Hastings-Havelock North General Ward
The Hastings District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 15 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Seven councillors will be elected from the Hastings-Havelock North ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Work with Hastings Business Association to drive new and established businesses to market and develop for local growth and employment.

    Develop national and international tourism through on the ground improvements, social media, natural resources and acclaimable initiatives.

    Work with youth to develop respect for work ethics, create opportunities for higher learning as well as traditional apprenticeships.

  • Create meaningful jobs for our people by supporting growth of existing businesses and attracting innovative new knowledge-based companies.

    Create vibrant city centres where our people and visitors want to shop, work and play through updated Hastings and Havelock North CBD strategies.

    Proactively connect disengaged young people to employment, apprentice and educational opportunities – reducing social needs later in life.

  • Promote Hastings post-1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake architecture and develop tourism with Hastings City Marketing to draw people to our CBD.

    Listen to our business/industry people in what their concerns/needs are to enable growth for them and to provide employment for our people.

    Develop with local industry and tertiary providers pathways to assist youth into jobs. Develop a rolling ten year plan of future needs.

  • Investigate business diversification while still supporting the strong agriculture in Hastings district.

    Commit to creating opportunities for youth employment.

  • Commit to supporting local businesses- promoting them and encouraging locals to buy local.

    Work with youth and families to stay in school and build capability around career choices.

    Commit to investment in our tourism industry.

  • Protect our local assets to keep local industry strong.

  • Attract capital investors in the service, tech, and productive sectors to grow the local economy.

    Foster a shift toward high-value goods production to increase incomes from their incredibly low base.

    Highlight pathways for youth and people early in their careers to get ahead here without feeling they need to leave Hastings to do so.
