Hastings District Council

Kahurānaki General Ward
The Hastings District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 15 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). One councillor will be elected from the Kahurānaki ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Review the current replacement of our rural bridges and consider if the replacement or upgrades can be brought forward.

    Consider the state of our rural roads and sealing program, given that logging is causing a significant damage to our rural roads.

    Encourage people to use our walking and cycleways.

  • Work with Waka Kotahi/New Zealand Transport Agency to adequately fund our roading network and regain the money they have cut from our budget.

    Make sure that forestry and other heavy-traffic producing industries pay their way when it comes to the damage they cause our roads.

    Make alternative forms of transport more viable and safe, such as cycling.
