Hauraki District Council

Plains Ward
The Hauraki District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 13 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Four councillors will be elected from the Plains ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Work with schools to educate and provide a seminar for restricted and young drivers on rural road safety.

    Clean and service existing footpaths where able.

    Build new park benches throughout towns to allow more resting spots for the elderly.

  • Provide as much access for cycling as is financially possible.

    Plan for footpath upgrades in Ngatea, it is a short to medium-term need.

    Work toward a roundabout at the intersection of SHW 2 and 27 at Mangatarata.
