Hauraki District Council

Plains Ward
The Hauraki District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 13 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Four councillors will be elected from the Plains ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Hauraki District Council election.

Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Supply subsidised worm farms to households, businesses and schools to divert food waste from landfill, reducing costs and greenhouse gases.

Work with schools on a waste reduction education program – get the next generation on board.

  • Keep water assets in local control. This small and relatively economically small region will go unheard in a nationwide entity.

Provide grass (not glass!) recycling as animal feed to the benefit of urban and rural parts of the community.

Work always on rubbish and recycling improvements.

  • Start an initiative to encourage increased household recycling and decreased household waste.

Support the councils current stance on Three Waters reforms.
