Hauraki District Council

Waihi Ward
The Hauraki District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 13 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Five councillors will be elected from the Waihi ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Hauraki District Council election.

Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Provide a reliable kerbside collection service, increase rates funded kerbside collection rate, educate and support to reduce rubbish.

Ensure the district receives its fair share of investment in its Three Waters services and the community voice is heard.

  • Retain local decision making ability with regard to three waters assets.

  • Install recycling bins in all large and small town centres and at events, and provide more education on how to recycle better at home.

Push back on the current proposed Three Waters reform. Reform is needed, but I do not support the current proposal and way it has been done.

Continue to support Keep New Zealand Beautiful's initiatives under the Keep Hauraki Beautiful umbrella, helping keep our towns clean.
