Hawke's Bay Regional Council

Ahuriri/Napier General Constituency
The Hawke's Bay Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of 11 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). Three councillors will be elected from the Ahuriri/Napier constituency. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Replace large buses running around empty with on-demand low impact transport options.

    Improve cycle safety with separated cycling networks.

    Improve door to door services for the elderly and disabled.

  • Work and support council initiatives to make buses for the public more flexible and user friendly as per the new MyWay bus trials.

    Work to make sure that all rural roads are fit for purpose, and keep repairs updated on an as-required basis. Repair bridges that require it.

    Work with maritime on areas that they require to improve their operations, look at better use of the rail network, reopen Napier to Gisborne.

  • Launch 'on demand' public transport in Napier in June 2023, on the back of successful trial in Hastings. $2 from anywhere to anywhere in Napier.
