Hawke's Bay Regional Council

Ahuriri/Napier General Constituency
The Hawke's Bay Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of 11 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). Three councillors will be elected from the Ahuriri/Napier constituency. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

    Commit to being proactive in establishing sea walls to protect our coastal inhabitants. Nobody to be forced from their homes.

    Continue being proactive with all civil defence priorities, and be available for earthquake strengthening queries from building owners.

  • Urgent investment in Napier's flood control infrastructure due to increasing extreme storm events.

    Respond to sea level rise threatening Napier's coastal assets and communities.

    Urgently invest in river stop banks to ensure Napier is protected from one in 500 flood events.

  • Spatial plan for Hawke's Bay, literally a blueprint for how we become a net zero carbon region by 2050.

    Replant our eroding hill slopes to prevent the leaching of sediment in increasingly frequent and severe storm events.

    Invest in better public transport, active transport (walking and cycling) and rail for freight.
