Kaipara District Council

Wairoa General Ward
The Kaipara District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of nine councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Wairoa ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Kaipara District Council election.

Why I'm standing

I love Kaipara District – unique in geographical spread and future potential, it is a great place to live and thrive, whatever stage of life you are at. My observations attending 90% of past 15 months council meetings suggests the community deserves a more unified and transparent council, truly engaging with ratepayers; not just rubber-stamping. I wish to serve on a local council that is honest, open and focused on unity and democracy for all.

About me

I am a 30+ year hotel leader, in corporate, regional and multiple general manager roles. I have led teams of over 1,000 with revenue responsibility up to US$150m and will apply this significant financial and commercial experience as a new councillor. My participation and governance within community organisations is primarily overseas. As an almost 2-year resident of Kaipara I have a clean slate and no baggage, and am committed to full-time council duties.

My priorities
  1. Financial – focus expenditure away from consultants, focus on projects that benefit the community as a whole. Reduce debt and rates.
  2. Democracy – defund and remove association with Local Government New Zealand to support open, honest, transparent decision-making on the back of real and full community engagement to deliver positive outcomes.
  3. Stop Three Waters – retain full administration and ownership of assets. Resist allowing interim sweetener payments, already in approval process.
