Kawerau District Council

The Kawerau District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of eight councillors and the mayor. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

    Elevate te ao Māori and kaitiakitanga in planning, problem-solving and decision-making.

    Support whānau, hapū and iwi to determine and deliver their own climate education, action and resilience at a local level.

  • Provide underprivileged whānau with a basic emergency kit.

    Commence an annual follow up with local civil defence groups to maintain resources.

    Encourage wood and steel material for new builds to adhere earthquakes.

  • Support initiatives that have been council driven but wish to look at full life cycle of vehicles lawnmowers etc., before further investment.

    As emergency responder, I believe I have first hand knowledge in this area to help develop a robust system to promote a hopeful outcome.
