Nelson City At Large
The Nelson City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also passes local regulations and makes decisions about infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage, and about the region’s resources, including water, soil and the coastline. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. This election is for the three councillors elected by all voters in the city. The other councillors will be elected to represent wards (areas in the city.) This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Helping communities get from A to B is a key responsibility of local government, from making sure the buses run on time to providing car parking and walking and cycling paths. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Improve car, bike and public transport accessibility in Nelson.

    Transition/add smaller more efficient van style buses that can provide service on a broader range of Nelson's landscape.

    Add signage to the back of the buses that reminds others to give way to the bus. Buses must be on time to be viable for work commuters.

  • Power up our public transport! Increase access, frequency, convenience. Advocate for free fares, on-demand public transport and share cars.

    Flip the transport hierarchy! Prioritise safety and ease for all active transport – walking, cycling, micro-mobility, accessibility.

    Enable low speed streets for safe active transport corridors connecting our neighbourhoods, city centre, to/from schools, work places etc.

    Reassess our future access plan for more efficient traffic flow.

    Better accessibility for parking in our CBD especially for disabled parking, and more loading zones.

  • Introduce tuktuk (tribike, tricycle) transport for short distances in towns.

    Support public bus transport from Nelson-Tasman, Motueka at fare discounts and with monthly free and other incentives.

    Revitalise airport to showcase Nelson's unique multicultural welcoming community.

  • Enhance public transport offerings so that we can be less reliant on cars, but still facilitate good parking options and park and ride.

    Provide better long term parking facilities for workers, residents and visitors.

    Investigate ferry services and extended bus services may enhance public transport and commuting.

  • Improve walking and cycling connections to and across our city.

    Improve parking in our central CBD and Tahuna and Stoke business and shopping centres.

    Take a reconsideration of the Future Access Project. Current plan will not cater for the transport capacity needs of Waimea and Rocks Road.

  • Adopt a voluntary local carbon quota initiative and incentivise individuals and businesses to track and cap their own carbon emissions.

    Incentivise working from home and implement strategies to facilitate living within cycling and walking distance of places we need to be.

    Incentivise employers facilitating active, public and ride sharing options with displays tracking weekly traffic volumes and occupancy rates.

  • Deliver on our overhaul of public transport, providing regular, frequent and affordable buses, with fares free travel for high-need groups.

    Work with providers to ensure the supply of shared car and bike services in Nelson, and supporting this with the required infrastructure.

    Develop and complete a connected cycleway network across our city, including lighting the Railway Reserve and a new cycleway to the Glen.
