Stoke-Tāhunanui General Ward
The Nelson City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also passes local regulations and makes decisions about infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage, and about the region’s resources, including water, soil and the coastline. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. Four councillors will be elected from the Stoke-Tāhunanui General ward. The other councillors will be elected from other wards or by all voters in the district. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper.   • Implement and maintain the heritage, arts, sports and parks and reserves strategies as these are important for a healthy, vibrant region.

  • Introduce a council sticker on all fully accessible council owned facilities by ensuring all can utilise.

    Commit to investing into an all weather sports ground with the support of all codes.

    Work with council staff to ensure all council owned facilities are receiving good income on festivals.

  • Promote a multipurpose recreational facility under one roof.

    Promote festivals that are inclusive of the entire community.

    Ensure better collaboration between council and sporting codes.

  • Install artificial turf on sports grounds whenever this will make them more useable and cheaper to maintain.

    Encourage more events and festivals to be held in Nelson, especially during winter and the shoulder seasons, to get more visitors and income.

    Install more rubbish bins at Tāhunanui Beach and anywhere else, where rubbish is often seen on the ground – keep Nelson clean and tidy.

  • Look at potential for free events for residents beyond the Santa parade.

    Develop better recreational spaces for teenage group.

  • Continue to do our best to encourage our varied communities with putea support to raise "Our Nelson – Tō Tātou Whakatū" happy event profile.

    Provide improved recreational facilities – Victory Square Sports Facility needs uplifting to provide for a more diverse ethnic community.

    Monitor our liquor and gambling machines strictly. Provide more educative information on addiction and mental health support services.
