New Plymouth District Council

New Plymouth District At Large
The New Plymouth District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 14 councillors and the mayor. This election is for the five councillors elected by all voters in the city. The other councillors will be elected to represent wards (areas in the city). This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the New Plymouth District Council election.

  • Discourage new alcohol off-premises licenses and reduce pokie outlets.

Encourage and support recreational facilities and events in rural and small communities.

Ensure the sports hub stays within budget.

  • Develop and regenerate our parks and public spaces, and providing more quality open spaces that a wide range of people can use and enjoy.

Take a measured approach to developing the multi-sport facility; do not invest more than is required to meet the future community need.

Support development and implementation of a Regional Arts Strategy to develop and invest in arts and artists in our region.

  • Relocate the intended multi-sport hub to future-proof it.

Give the boy-racers an alternative venue rather than parks and roads.

  • I support the Tūparikino Active Community Hub as an inter-generational well-being facility. New Plymouth District Council should cap our contribution at $40 million.

I will continue to fully support the creative arts sector including World of Music, Arts and Dance, Festival of Lights events and festivals including Te Matatini 2025 bid planning.

I fully support New Plymouth District Council being a funding partner to Taranaki Foundation's Destination Play, the southern hemisphere's largest Destination Play project.

  • Ensure Tūparikino Active Community Hub meets community needs without imposing unreasonably on ratepayers.

Engage with business, institutions and community to revitalise downtown New Plymouth.

Ensure that the communities of Waitara, Ōākura, Urenui, Ōkato and Inglewood have the resources to attend to their communities' needs.

  • Commit to parks and open spaces for all people to enjoy. Keep them family friendly and attractive for extended families.

Commit to reducing gambling and liquor licensing facilities within our electorate, or to bring in community consultation for these to exist.

Commit to making sure that all facilities are available first before new ones are built. We have a large number of unused facilities.

  • Multi sports hub expenditure must be capped, and any overruns are the responsibility of future users. Caution needed now exploding costs abound.

Actively recruit and bring back international acts to The Bowl and TSB stadium. Time to come out of our COVID-19 induced shells. The world's open.

Support LLC to become more independent in operating needs in the long term and make more kinetic artwork visible in other public spaces.

  • Many halls are not up to standard and are expensive causing them to be under utilised. Let's fix them and make them affordable!

I think the multipurpose sport club is a great initiative however there are more pressing issues that need to be addressed first.

Ensure council provided facilities are self funded and free to local residents and minimise rate rises to fund them.

  • Continue to maintain and improve sporting and cultural venues to promote a healthy and active lifestyle.

continue to maintain and improve parks and reserves for the benefit of residents and as a draw card for visitors.
