Why I'm standing

I originally stood for the Otago Regional Council because I believed that our pristine natural lakes were under environmental threat. But after two terms, I have come to realise that the greatest need is to engage all Otago's residents as our region's guardians and environmentalists. As an experienced politician and communicator, I accept that the Otago Regional Council must do better. And that means trusting those that we serve, and being prepared to listen.

About me

I'm an experienced policy-maker, politician and communicator – and a believer in giving communities and people, the tools and resources they need to make a positive difference to the region's environment. I also have the knowledge of when to say 'no' and to rigorously question information reported and consequent policy advice. A discerning mind is essential for good local governors.

My priorities
  1. Real communication – honesty and transparency between the Otago Regional Council and the communities that we serve.
  2. Scientific awareness – making decisions based upon facts not ideology, and shared openly with all.
  3. Being courageous enough to question whether policies imposed from Wellington work locally.
