Porirua City Council

Onepoto General Ward
The Porirua City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 10 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the city). Five councillors will be elected from the Onepoto ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Porirua City Council election.

Transport

Helping communities get from A to B is a key responsibility of local government, from making sure the buses run on time to providing car parking and walking and cycling paths. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Ensure road maintenance (including potholes) is planned and managed effectively.

Smart creation and use of any potential cycle ways and paths, ie being careful not to spend money where it's not required.

  • Advocate for a review of the contract model for roading/footpath repair and maintenance. Let's see if we are getting value for money.

Investigate more tactical urbanism projects. Let's get some of the rules out of the way and make streets safer for everyone.

Complete the shared pathway from Wineera to Onepoto. It's a project I supported before being on council, and we need to get it done.

  • Encourage less carbon-intensive transport like bus networks, providing safe cycleways and adding to our already great selection of walks.

Support construction of the Porirua CBD to Titahi Bay shared pathway to provide coastal resilience and encourage active transport modes.

  • To investigate new formulas for ongoing pot-hole issues for example upcycling tyres towards crumbed rubber asphalt for longer lifespans.

Ensuring all footpaths and offramps in public spaces are wheelchair friendly, managing deep cracks and concrete breakage.
