Porirua City Council

Onepoto General Ward
The Porirua City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 10 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the city). Five councillors will be elected from the Onepoto ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Porirua City Council election.

Housing and planning

Local councils are responsible for land use planning under the Resource Management Act, which affects where and how new houses are constructed, as well as the design of cities and towns. In some areas, councils also provide housing to those who need it most.

  • Work together with central government, developers and housing providers to speed up production of much needed new homes.

Review the District Plan to accommodate changes in legislation including the Resource Management Act allowing for greater density to increase housing supply.

  • Assess why and how people in our community are homeless, support change.

Work with the council team to future plan our city's housing needs and requirements to benefit the community.

Ensure rental properties meet the required health and safety standards.

  • Remove or alter sub-contract building consents to make building on already owned land easier to process.

Creating a rental market cap pending on zone, housing qualities, rates and number of properties owned.

Establishing an understanding of disability and elderly difficulties to provide safer layouts for their day-to-day living.

  • Advocate for a strategy on homelessness and overcrowding. I won't quit asking Porirua City Council to take leadership, as Wellington and Hutt City already do.

Change our development charges for building community and social housing: we give breaks to build retirement villages, this is a better way.

Advocate for "fifteen minute suburbs". We need Greater Wellington Regional Council to step up on transport and we need to support district planning that drives this approach.
