Onepoto General Ward
The Porirua City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 10 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the city). Five councillors will be elected from the Onepoto ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Climate change and resilience

  • Build on our climate change policy to reduce emissions. Convert council fleet to electric; encouraging less carbon-intensive transport.

    Reinforce climate policy thinking based on mitigation, adaptation and retreat.

    Move swiftly to composting to reduce the amount of food waste and green waste that's currently dumped at our landfill.

  • Work with the council team to help reduce greenhouse emissions, by logical and effective planning.

    Commit to adapting to climate change through sensible approaches which improve and protect our venerable areas.

    Driving measures which will assist our city's preparedness for natural disasters and help ensure the impacts are kept to a minimum.

  • Divert household organic waste from landfill. We're spending millions on methane-related Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) charges. We can spend that money better.

    Advocate for improvements to active transport links, working with Greater Wellington Regional Council to remove the barriers that make travelling without a car so hard.

    Accelerate "Te Ao Hurihuri" Climate Change Action Plan for Porirua. We have a plan, we need to not only get on with it, but move quickly.
