Ruapehu General Ward
The Ruapehu District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of nine councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Six councillors will be elected from the Ruapehu General ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

    Establish a culture and heritage department that registers earthquake-prone buildings and secure funding for earthquake strengthening.

  • Support an economically diversified district to reduce reliance on seasonality and build resilience in the face of a changing environment.

    Ensure that infrastructure improvements reflect the challenges that come with climate change.

    Advocate for the increased protection of our natural assets to strengthen the tourism and conservation partnership.

  • Establish a robust infrastructure of council roading and water services to avoid damage in preparation to climate changes.

  • Commit council to promote the sustainable development goals to combat climate change and its impacts.

    Promote zero waste and carbon zero solutions through education and rewarding incentives.
