Ruapehu District Council

Ruapehu General Ward
The Ruapehu District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of nine councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Six councillors will be elected from the Ruapehu General ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Work proactively with government to ensure a commuter train service between Auckland and Wellington for our district stopping at Taumarunui.

    Work with the regional council to introduce a bus service between our townships.

  • Encourage more people out of their cars and into public transport. Develop more accessible pathways and commuter bike paths/trails.

    Advocate for central government to maintain and upgrade New Zealand's rail network to support passengers and freight to and from Ruapehu.

    Support developing safe areas for people to pull over in photographic hot spots, supported with signage and education.

  • Prioritise road repairs and maintenance to improve the safety of our roads.

    Advocate for trains to stop in major townships in our region to improve public transport.
