Selwyn District Council

Malvern Ward
The Selwyn District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 10 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Two councillors will be elected from the Malvern ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Selwyn District Council election.

Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Ensure ratepayers voices are heard in regard to Three Waters – no to handing over ratepayer assets.

Investigate on how to make rubbish and recycling collection more extensive in our rural areas – not all areas have collection.

Work with animal control and community initiatives to support the eradication of pests in Malvern.

  • Stop Three Waters, address the issues regarding our water, chlorine is great in pools but not in drinking water or your child's bottle.

Address the issues not the symptoms regarding water supplies, upgrade water systems, fresh and sewage where needed.

Open Rolleston dump earlier, grit the 100km/h roads more often, illuminate more of our dangerous intersections. Increase cell phone coverage.

  • Work with central government to establish sustainable, cost effective infrastructure that provides long term safe drinking water.

Establish functioning wastewater and stormwater systems that meet the individual community needs as chlorination is not always the answer.

Establish a rates funded rubbish and recycle collection in rural Malvern where no service is available currently eg Glenroy.

  • Provide recycling services and rubbish collection for outlying communities.

Say no to Three Waters as the model is flawed, undemocratic, incurs sizeable debt which may not be affordable, and allows co-governance.
