Oreti Ward
The Southland District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Oreti ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.     Identify and minimise the negative impact on the functions of council should the proposed changes with Three Waters come to fruition.

    Increase the effectiveness of our consultative processes, so the voice of the ratepayer is heard – learning from the Three Waters experience.

  • Implement effective communication policies to ensure the council fully liaises with our local communities.

    Advocating for community-led approaches where local solutions and localism is at the front of decision-making.

    Transform the culture of Southland District Council top down by implementing policies to ensure a Southland first, and four wellbeings approach.

  • Commit to better and more efficient public engagement.

  • Find new ways to engage with our community, ie events at parks and reserves.

    Build on our relationship with iwi, listen, learn and work together.

    Continue to ensure we are a welcoming community to all.
