Southland District Council

Oreti Ward
The Southland District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Oreti ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Local governments play a central role in protecting the environment, reducing waste and safeguarding biodiversity. The worsening state of New Zealand’s lakes and rivers is a major challenge for local councils, which work with regional councils in the management of water resources in their area.

  • Aim to foster community collaboration in anti-littering initiatives throughout the district.

    Advocate for Kōwhai Reach, working with QEII, and other key stakeholders to ensure this indigenous ecosystem is protected.

    Support catchment groups to collectively take responsibility for water quality through upskilling and shared knowledge of good management.

  • Improve our waste management – greater effort to reduce waste and recycle more.

    Invest in better wastewater treatment that is better for our waterways.

    Protect our environment in a balanced way, listening to all sides including farmers who love their land.

  • Commit to encouraging less mud farming in Southland and also use less water overall.

    Commit to encouraging more planting of native plants overall.

    Commit to encouraging more recycling.

  • Increase the focus on waste minimisation strategies creating a side benefit of reducing the significant and increasing costs in this area.

    Set timeframes for community consultation on national biodiversity legislation and listen to their feedback to develop next steps.

    Work with iwi and Environment Southland, so we can advocate together for central government funding support, to enable the required work.
