Southland District Council

Oreti Ward
The Southland District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Oreti ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Ensure that the Southland District Council continues to meet timeframes regarding the consent and sign-off process for our tradespeople.

    Do a master plan for development and rezoning in Winton so the township can grow and prosper.

    Ensure that the district plan allows for high-density housing zones for seasonal working and first home buyers.

  • Explore options to make building easier and more cost-effective.

    Review our district plan to ensure it is meeting the needs of today while protecting tomorrow. Make the right land easy to build on.

    Encourage creative housing solutions, ie tiny homes, factory build etc.

  • Identify areas in Southland District Council where housing development can occur, particularly in growth areas and development contributions are put in place.

    Work as local bodies and iwi to complete the spatial planning work to identify areas suitable for development and those that need protection.

    Support and build on the work already completed by those involved in developing a local response to address the shortage of rental housing.

  • Commit to building consents being implemented as per council rules. Fairness. Buildings need to have legal sewage and water connections.
