Transport

Helping communities get from A to B is a key responsibility of local government, from making sure the buses run on time to providing car parking and walking and cycling paths. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Continue to invest more in our roads and bridges so they are fit for purpose.

Encourage ride sharing, and continue to advocate for some public transport across the district.

Advocate for our share of road income to come back to our roads from central government.

  • Continue to develop Southland District Council's roading and bridge infrastructure to ensure accessibility for those who live and travel throughout the district.

Ensure that our walking tracks are maintained to a high level, accessible and enjoyed by people from all walks of life.

Advocate to Waka Kotahi for funding towards dust suppressants for affected ratepayers.

  • Commit to more rural transport for communities.

  • Continue with the current strategic approach to bridge replacement and consult closely with our communities that are effected by closures.

Continue with the ottaseal option for those in the rural communities where dust is having a significant impact on health and well being.

Advocate strongly as a Council to seek adequate support from Waka Kotahi to enable us to carry out the necessary road, infrastructure work.
