Waimakariri District Council

Rangiora-Ashley Ward
The Waimakariri District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 10 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Four councillors will be elected from the Rangiora-Ashley ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Investigate what can be done to ensure roads in and out of Rangiora, Kaiapoi, Oxford and other communities are safe and flowing optimally.

    Look at road safety priorities in the district and see what measures and additional government funding there may be for this area.

  • Improve roading. Needs more investment to upgrade the damaged roads, particularly from Waka Kotahi.

    Avoid more congestion in Southbrook with an eastern link road from Lineside road to Northbrook Road.

    Develop Rangiora Airfield. to protect this fine asset for the next 30 years.

  • Improve public transport options, access within the district, and to Christchurch, ie smaller electric buses running more frequently.

    Investigate alternate transport options in the district including shared cars (electric), and increased cycling facilities.

    Ensure all options are reviewed before moving ahead with new roading projects.

  • Get the Eastern corridor bypass completed to get traffic congestion away from Southbrook.

    Ban e-scooters from the district.

    Support council's ongoing commitment to maintaining the quality of our roads and footpaths.

  • Encourage and support the use of public transport.

    Commit to supporting the growth of Rangiora Airfield as it heads towards future self sufficiency.

  • Investigate the feasibility of a rates rebate for public transport users.

    Promote alternative forms of transport to reduce congestion on the arterial roads.

    Continue to work with the council on ideas for Southbrook Road.

  • Support the Eastern Link road to reduce traffic congestion on our southern roads.

    Support the use of public or shared transport alternatives to lower traffic numbers.

    Continue to invest in the shared cycle and walking network linking our towns and have a safer path to use, improving our health along the way.

  • Strongly advocate for a eastern bypass in Rangiora around Southbrook Road. Continue to argue for a eastern State Highway One Woodend bypass.

    Continue to invest in road safety improvements.
