Waipapa Papanui-Innes-Central Community Board

Central Subdivision
The Waipapa Papanui-Innes-Central Community Board represents your local community and advocates to Christchurch City Council about local issues, including public transport and facilities such as libraries and parks. The board is made up of nine members: six members elected by voters, including two members from your area, and three councillors from the Christchurch City council. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

  • Committing to building Christchurch a "City in a park". The vision is to create a greener, sustainable urban environment.

    Promote and support our local communities to engage in plantations across the city.

    Advocate for all decisions being made to regard climate and ecological change as the number one threat to ourselves and future generations.

  • Commit to seeing Christchurch increasing the city's tree cover and seeing progress with OARC.

    Commit to council to continue working on the flood protection work and bring it forward from the long term plan if possible.

  • Review all community board activity. Identify areas where emissions can be reduced and make those changes.

    Through modelling establish places where residents can go to escape flood, or other extreme conditions and where services can be available.

    Fund and encourage neighbours to meet, eg at a local BBQ event where cooperative plans can be discussed to be implemented in a disaster.

  • Help to ensure that the city council and regional council work together to future-proof our city for climate change.
