The Waitai Coastal-Burwood-Linwood Community Board represents your local community and advocates to Christchurch City Council about local issues, including public transport and facilities such as libraries and parks. The board is made up of nine members: six members elected by voters, including two members from your area, and three councillors from the Christchurch City council. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Local governments play a central role in protecting the environment, reducing waste and safeguarding biodiversity. The worsening state of New Zealand’s lakes and rivers is a major challenge for local councils, which work with regional councils in the management of water resources in their area.

Local governments play a central role in protecting the environment, reducing waste and safeguarding biodiversity. The worsening state of New Zealand’s lakes and rivers is a major challenge for local councils, which work with regional councils in the management of water resources in their area.

  • Water quality and preservation: we need to follow experts and understand the more natual the water the better and put fluoride in the water.

    Biodiversity and pest control: continue to work with Christchurch City Council rangers to keep up with the pest control, especially the control of rabbits.

    Waste minimisation and management: Advocate for residents to recycle better and for Christchurch City Council to collect rubbish more efficiently.

  • Retention basins are required as soon as practical in the Red Zones – must be a high priority – higher than the bloody stadium.

    Clean the Avon and Heathcote. Do we clean the gutters more often? Do we make more retention basins for all stormwater?

    Work with all community Boards in Canterbury and perhaps New Zealand along side Government to create policy on packaging and REAL recycling.
