The Waitai Coastal-Burwood-Linwood Community Board represents your local community and advocates to Christchurch City Council about local issues, including public transport and facilities such as libraries and parks. The board is made up of nine members: six members elected by voters, including two members from your area, and three councillors from the Christchurch City council. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Helping communities get from A to B is a key responsibility of local government, from making sure the buses run on time to providing car parking and walking and cycling paths. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

Helping communities get from A to B is a key responsibility of local government, from making sure the buses run on time to providing car parking and walking and cycling paths.   • Grow an accessible and functional transport system.

  • Walking and cycling: we need to still invest in cycleways and walking tracks in the east, however, do not overspend on these items.

    Traffic congestion: we must look into future ways to avoid traffic congestion and these idea could be radical ones, like moving and closing roads.

    Public transport: work with the private sector to remove the big buses and utilise smaller eco-friendly vehicles to go in and out of suburbs.
