Wellington City Council

Paekawakawa/Southern General Ward
The Wellington City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 15 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the city). Two councillors will be elected from the Paekawakawa/Southern ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Wellington City Council election.

Why I'm standing

I want to give back to the city that has given me so much. I came from Ethiopia 14 years ago and worked in low-paid jobs to support my family while studying at Victoria University where I gained a master's degree in international relations. Now I run a small business with my wife and raise my children in this beautiful city.

About me

I am a community organiser. I am a chair of the African community council that is based in Newtown where I helped organise covid19 vaccination events and helped set up Aman Community Center.

My priorities
  1. Housing – we need to build more houses because we have a housing crisis in Wellington.
  2. Public transport – to address climate change and congestion we need to change the way travel.
  3. Infrastructure – we have underinvested in our infrastructure for decades and we are paying the price.
