The Western Bay of Plenty District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 11 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Four councillors will be elected from the Kaimai ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Climate change and resilience

Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

  • Lobby central government for funding for climate change resilience, to ensure taxes gathered locally are spent locally, eg GST on rates.

    Restrict future development at marginal sites with higher risks of flood, slip, liquefaction or environmental damage, eg polluted waterways.

    Commit to better connectivity for communities with single road or bridge access (often rural) to prevent isolation during emergencies.

  • Continue Wester Bay of Plenty District Ccouncil leadership and involvement with the regional National Emergency Management Agency group.

    Maintain a watch on climate trends to ensure that council's 10 year and 30 year plans are modified as and when necessary.

  • Continue to support homeowners when lifting their houses to escape sea level rise we will fund the resource consents for building work.

    Civil defence is the responsibility of the regional council we can still support and help promote the activities within our communities.

    Te Puna to Omokoroa. Built State Highway 2 as soon as possible, so people are not sitting in cars for the significant periods of time as is the case now.
