Western Bay of Plenty District Council

The Western Bay of Plenty District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 11 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Four councillors will be elected from the Kaimai ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Prioritise projects where residents have complained about speed/sightlines/surfaces e.g. Youngson, Ainsworth, Oropi, Ohauiti, Wright Rds.

    Check every school and preschool in the district has safe speed limits and parking at peak times, along with local consultation where needed.

    Continue to work towards completing our district's share of the walkway and cycleway network from Waihi to Tauranga.

  • Support extension of the excellent pedestrian and cycle trail networks.

    Acknowledge that public transport is the regional council responsibility and work with them on infrastructure such as bus shelters.

    Continue pressure on NZTA for improvements in State Highways in our district.

  • Work with central government to ensure major upgrade of State Highway 2 and State Highway 29, including four-lanes from Te Puna to Omokoroa.

    Support the Port of Tauranga, including the expansion which is desperately needed, for the benefit of the whole region.

    Reduce the speed limit on narrow winding rural roads.
